Long before the New Orleans Pelicans descended onto the basketball world, New Orleans had an NBA team known, understandably given the city’s fame as a musical hotbed, as the New Orleans Jazz. In 1979, the Jazz relocated to Salt Lake City and retain their name (as the Utah Jazz) to this day despite there being nothing especially jazzy about the team’s new home. When New Orleans finally welcomed NBA basketball back in 2002 after the purchase and relocation of the Charlotte franchise, they initially stuck with Hornets but eventually switched to the Pelicans in 2013 due to a new franchise (confusingly!) being awarded to Charlotte and wanting their old name back. The Pelicans/Hornets have not been all that successful in their relatively brief tenure in the NBA so far. The Pelicans have qualified for the Playoffs 8 times in 21 seasons, winning just two playoff series, one in 2008 and one in 2018. They narrowly missed out on the NBA Playoffs in 2023 after they lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Play-In Tournament. New Orleans Pelicans fans will be hoping that the talents of Brandon Ingram, Dyson Daniels, and Jonas Valanciunas can carry them back into the postseason in 2024.
Because the New Orleans Pelicans are still relative newcomers to the NBA, the team has not developed the type of deep-seated rivalries that take decades of enmity to develop. Nevertheless, the Pelicans have already ruffled a few feathers in the league, developing rivalries with the Houston Rockets, who play in the same division as the Pelicans, as well as the Memphis Grizzlies and Chicago Bulls.
New Orleans Pelicans basketball games at Smoothie King Center still feel like something of an exciting novelty, despite the team entering its third decade in the city (without much success to show for it, yet). Fans are extremely enthusiastic and loud, showing up decked out in red and doing their best to cheer the Pelicans on to success. There is a sense of building excitement at Pelicans games, an anticipation that something very exciting could be just around the corner.
