Pretty Lights, real name Derek Vincent Smith, is an electronic music producer who has been described as “the voice and face of the new electronic music scene in America.” Pretty Lights started out as a music project with Smith and Michal Menert. After their first album came out, Menert left the group. Smith skateboarded with his collaborator in 8th grade and started making music together after one of their skating sessions. They were influenced by The Beastie Boys and other old-school hip-hop, punk, and the overall skater culture. Before it broke up, the band got second place in a community band of bands contest in high school. After graduating high school, Smith went to college but dropped out to pursue music.
