Stanford Cardinal football, based out of Stanford University in California, has long been one of the strongest college football programs on the Pacific Coast, with a long and proud history stretching back into the 1890s. Stanford Cardinal’s first big leap forward took place in the 1920s, when legendary football coach Pop Warner took over the team (due to a doctor recommending that he move to California for his health!) and led Stanford Cardinal to their first claimed national title with an undefeated 10-0-1 record in 1926 and to their first Rose Bowl win in 1927. Stanford would go on to win another national title in 1940 as well as 6 more Rose Bowls, cementing their place as one of the main competitors within the Pac-12 (previously Pac-10) Conference. Since a dominant spell between 2011 and 2017 under coach David Shaw in which Stanford Cardinal won five conference titles in seven seasons, there has been a serious downturn, with the team posting four losing seasons in the past five years.
