The Pittsburgh Panthers football team has a bit of an odd overall program record, in that they boast an incredible 17 national titles (9 claimed, 8 unclaimed) but just 3 conference triumphs. This can be explained largely by the fact that the team played as an Independent school for 100 years, only joining the Big East in 1991 and later the ACC in 2013. Over the course of their history, the Panthers have long been considered one of the best college football teams in America, not only registering a 761–560–42 all-time record for a win percentage of .574, but also winning 15 Bowl games (though their Bowl record is less impressive overall, at 15-22-0). That said, recent years in conference play have proved a challenge to the Panthers at times, with none of their national titles coming after 1981, but they have at least managed to remain competitive.
