2022-23 Regular Season Record: 7-25

2023 Postseason Record: Did not qualify

Legendary Alumni: Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Reggie Williams, Alonzo Mourning, Allen Iverson

National Championships: 1 (1984)

The Georgetown Hoyas basketball team has long been one of the more popular and successful NCAA basketball teams in America, known as much for their cool merchandise featuring a smiling bulldog logo as for their exploits on the court (for those not in the know, a “Hoya” is a particular breed of bulldog). As well as their successes as a team, the Hoyas are also well known for producing some of the NBA’s biggest stars, such as Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Reggie Williams, Alonzo Mourning, Allen Iverson. The Hoyas have qualified for the NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournament on 31 occasions. The team’s earliest foray into the tournament occurred in 1943, when they came within one game of winning their first title, losing out to the Wyoming Cowboys by a score of 46–34 in the final and finishing as national runners-up. The team would not again make serious inroads into the tournament again until the 1980s and 90s, when, led by star players like Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo, the Hoyas reached the Elite 8 on 7 occasions, pushing on into the Final Four in 1982, 1984, and 1985. The team reached back to back NCAA championships finals in 1984 and 1985, winning the first by a score of 84–75 over the Houston Cougars to bring home Georgetown’s first ever NCAA basketball title. The Hoyas came painfully close to a rare back to back title repeat in 1985, but were beaten 66–64 by the low-seeded Villanova Wildcats, often considered to be one of the biggest upsets in NCAA final history. The years since have seen the Hoyas continue to play quite competitively at both conference and national levels, though a single Elite 8 appearance in 2007 remains their one big postseason drive in recent decades. The team endured a dismal few years under Patrick Ewing as head coach (2017-2023) that culminated in a disastrous 7-25 record in 2022-23 that saw Ewing depart at the end of the season. Hoyas fans will be hoping to see their team’s fortunes take a dramatic turn for the better in 2024 and the seasons to come.

How can I get cheap tickets to Georgetown Hoyas games?

The Georgetown Hoyas currently share Capital One Arena with the Washington Wizards of the NBA (and Washington Capitals of the NHL). Having access to such a superb professional facility to host their home games has undoubtedly boosted the team’s ticket sales, and student fans have few problems traveling from the university to the venue. It is not unheard of for particularly postseason tournament games, key conference deciders, or rivalry matchups, to sell out in advance. For your best chance to get the cheapest tickets to Georgetown Hoyas games, search the TicketX listings on this page and use our handy TicketX seating chart to compare prices and locations. You can buy tickets with the lowest commission fees from TicketX with a single click!

Georgetown Hoyas Rivalries

For the Georgetown Hoyas basketball team, their biggest rivals, by far and away, have always been the Syracuse Orange. This rivalry smoldered for many years until it truly heated up in the 1980s when the two teams became the top contenders vying for control of the Big East Conference. Georgetown famously ended Syracuse’s 57-game home winning streak in 1980 and also defeated their rivals in all four of the Big East championship games between the teams in the 1980s. Fellow Big Easters (and Catholics) the Villanova Wildcats are also big rivals, particularly after Villanova’s defeat of the Hoyas in the 1985 championship final. The Hoyas also have historic rivalries with the St. John’s Red Storm and UConn Huskies

Are Georgetown Hoyas basketball games exciting?

Georgetown Hoyas basketball games generate plenty of excitement due to being held in Capital One Arena, home of the Washington Wizards of the NBA (and Washington Capitals of the NHL). Hoyas fans flock to home games in droves, clad in the school colors of blue and gray, singing the time-honored chant of “HOYA, HOYA SAXA!” as well as the Hoya Fight Song. The school mascot, Jack the Bulldog, is one of the most recognizable mascots in all of college sports.
