They might hail from a relatively small school in a (very) small town, but the UConn Huskies have consistently punched above their weight when it comes to college basketball. Recent decades in particular have seen the Huskies dominate the Big East Conference, with the team appearing in the NCAA postseason March Madness tournament 23 times since 1990. In the years since, the Huskies have made it to the Sweet 16 on 15 occasions, the Elite 8 on 11, and the Final Four on 6, leaping the penultimate hurdle to reach the NCAA championship final on all but one occasion (2009). Incredibly, all five times that the Huskies have played in an NCAA championship final, they have emerged victorious, an unbelievable perfect record in games with such high stakes. Helping the Huskies to reach these heights have been some truly talented players who later moved on to star in the NBA, such as Ray Allen, Kemba Walker, Andre Drummond, and Richard Hamilton. The Huskies won their most recent NCAA title just last year, in 2023, defeating the San Diego State Aztecs by a lopsided score of 76-59 in the final. This means that in 2024 the Huskies will be heading into NCAA March Madness looking to repeat as champions. This is a rare occurrence in college basketball, especially in modern times, but if you speak to UConn fans, many believe that if anyone can do it, it just might be their Huskies.
While the capacity of Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, at just over 10,000, is not particularly big by NCAA standards, it seems larger when one considers that the entire population of the town of Storrs is only about 16,000 people! The UConn Huskies’ fame on the national stage in recent decades has earned them fans from all over New England and even further afield. High demand means that tickets can be hard to find, particularly for postseason tournament games, key conference deciders, or rivalry matchups (see below). Any team that rises suddenly and dramatically to championship success is going to ruffle a few feathers on the way, and the UConn Huskies are no exception. The team’s rivalry with the Syracuse Orange is based more on a legacy of big games than any real animus, with the Orange defeating the Huskies in 2009 in one of the most epic conference tournament games of all time that went to six overtimes. The Huskies also have a long-standing rivalry with the Georgetown Hoyas, against whom they enjoy a narrow 38-36 all-time series advantage. Other rivals include the Duke Blue Devils, Pittsburgh Panthers, and Villanova Wildcats.
The atmosphere in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion (dubbed rather grandiosely the College Basketball Capital of the World by local residents) can be electric for big games, with sellout crowds led by red-headed superfan Big Red in cheers of “U-C-O-N-N” as the wild man spells out the letters with his arms. Fans come clad in the school colors of white and national flag blue with some going so far as to paint their bodies in support of their beloved Huskies.
