About Tyler Childers

Tyler Childers is a Kentucky-born country folk music musician who has received Grammy nominations for mixing traditional bluegrass, folk, and neotraditional country music. His breakthrough album Purgatory (2017) and recent hits like "In Your Love" have only increased his popularity.

Kentucky Country Roots

Born on June 21, 1991, in Paintsville, Kentucky, Timothy Tyler Childers is ever a Kentucky country boy. Childers grew up in rural Lawrence County undeniably entrenched in the Appalachian culture his music would later be influenced by and weave into his lyrics. Childers was born with clubfoot, a congenital muscle and bone disorder of the feet. This was a condition that made one or both feet point in and usually up.

From an early age, Childers was influenced by country, bluegrass, and folk music traditions that were common and plentiful in his home region. From teenagers, he wrote songs based on the stories and struggles of the people around him. He learned the ropes through his early shows in multiple local venues and his voice began to take shape.

In 2017, Childers released his breakthrough album Purgatory, which marked a turning point in his career. It was his album's success that catapulted him from playing small venues to selling out a few larger theaters.

Childers, who was raised in the Appalachian area, has kept true to his Appalachian roots throughout his career, using his platform to draw attention to the various challenges the region is faced with and to celebrate the richness of its culture. He’s a bridge between traditional country sounds and modern storytelling.

Rise of “Purgatory”

Tyler Childers' 2017 album Purgatory marked a significant turning point in his career, catapulting him from playing 400-capacity rooms to selling out multiple nights at 2,600-person theaters. Co-produced with Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson, the album, is a semi-autobiographical reflection upon life in Eastern Kentucky and deals with themes of angst, self-discovery, and love. Purgatory received critical acclaim, earning a Metacritic score of 82 and appearing on several year-end lists.

Key aspects of the album's success include:

  • The authentic portrayal of the life and struggles of the Appalachian people.

  • The production collaboration with

    Sturgill Simpson

, which helped shape songs like "Universal Sound"

  • A mix of traditional country sounds with modern storytelling

  • Great songwriting that people connected with, songs like they were talking about drug use or relationships without the apology

  • Platinum certification

, with over 638,000 copies sold by December 2020

Appalachian Community Support

Tyler Childers has become a powerful voice in social commentary via his music, saying what needs to be said about Appalachia & rural America. He’s nicknamed “the 21st Century Voice of the Appalachia” for a reason.

He and his wife Senora May set up The Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund back in 2020 to support philanthropic work in the Appalachian Region and Kentucky. This initiative focuses on three key areas: education, civil rights, and addiction recovery. The fund is establishing an endowment called the Hickman Holler Appalachian College Fund to award scholarships for students of color and those with financial need at certain Appalachian colleges.
