While Kentucky native Tyler Childers has been singing ever since he joined the church choir as a child and performing and recording professionally since the age of 19, his big breakthrough came in 2017 when he released the album Purgatory, which hit the top of the country charts and earned Childers several Awards. Childers frequently pens songs about his home state and the people he grew up around, including his coal miner father, and has been praised for offering a more positive narrative about such rural parts of the United States than is often promoted in popular culture. A trip to one of Tyler Childers’s concerts will delight fans with soulful lyrics set to up-tempo tunes featuring banjos and fiddles played at breakneck bluegrass speeds. Tyler Childers is an American singer-songwriter who has gained recognition in the music industry for his distinctive fusion of bluegrass, folk, and neotraditional country music. His musical career started in a church choir and developed when, at the age of 13, he began studying guitar and songwriting. Tyler Childers enrolled in college, but left to concentrate on his music career. He gave his first performances in Lexington, Kentucky, and Huntington, West Virginia. At the age of 19, he released his debut album, "Bottles And Bibles," and a few EPs that became popular after the popularity of his later work. The Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson-produced studio album "Purgatory," which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart in 2017, was Tyler Childers' breakthrough release. He received Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Music Honors & Awards, and his acceptance speech there was noteworthy for its criticism of the Americana genre designation, which expressed his increased affinity for country music. "Country Squire," his follow-up album to Simpson and Ferguson, was released in 2019. It featured the Grammy-nominated song "All Your'n." Tyler Childers made his intention to use his platform for a wider cause clear when he published "Long Violent History," an album that had traditional fiddle pieces mostly. The album closed with a strong title track that discussed racism, civil unrest, and police brutality. Tyler Childers' first album to reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200 was the triple album "Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?" which was published in 2022. The single "In Your Love" and the album "Rustin' In the Rain" that followed in 2023 demonstrated his dedication to using music to promote important social concerns, like same-sex marriage and the rights of coal miners. Tyler Childers' impact goes beyond just music; he co-founded the Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund with his wife Senora May to aid neglected villages in the Appalachian region. Tyler Childers's genuine and thought-provoking music continues to appeal with a large audience despite personal problems, including a battle with alcoholism, solidifying his place as a prominent character in current country and folk music.
