Atlanta United FC appeared on the scene in MLS as a new expansion franchise in 2017 with a quietly impressive first season, finishing 4th in the Eastern Conference and qualifying for the MLS Playoffs, where they lost in the First Round. No one could have anticipated, however, what would happen in season two, however, when Atlanta United finished 2nd in the whole league in the regular season led by star striker Josef Martinez, who set an MLS record with 31 goals, and current Premier League player Miguel Almirón, who notched 12 goals and 14 assists. Atlanta then went on a mad run through the Playoffs to the MLS Cup Final, held in front of an incredible home crowd of 73,019 at the cavernous Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where they managed to defeat the Portland Timbers 2-0 and win their first MLS Cup in just their second years of existence! The next year, in 2018, Atlanta United followed up on this success by reaching the Semifinals of the MLS Playoffs, winning the US Open Cup as well as the Campeones Cup (played between the previous year’s champions of the USA and Mexico). Since the departure of Almirón and Martinez, as well as inspirational coach Tata Martino (now manager of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami CF), Atlanta United have struggled somewhat in recent years, but with crowds of 40-50,000 cheering them on at home games, surely it will only be a matter of time before they are back on top.
Atlanta United FC plays in the massive new state of the art Mercedes-Benz Stadium, also home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. Nevertheless, tickets are often scarce, as Atlanta United FC has one of the best attendances in the MLS, with crowds of over 50,000 a common occurrence. Tickets can be especially hard to get for playoff games, cup games, key conference deciders, or rivalry matchups (see below). **As with any sport, there is never a guarantee that an athlete will be available to play in a certain game. Injuries and other issues can rule Messi out of action, just as they can with any other athlete.
Atlanta United FC‘s biggest rivals are Orlando City SC due to geographical proximity and some tough games between the two over the years. New expansion teams Nashville SC, Charlotte FC, and Inter Miami CF will also likely become local rivals in the years to come.
There are very few stadiums in the United States where you can experience a soccer game with as large a crowd as at an Atlanta United FC match. The team was fully embraced by the sports-mad city of Atlanta from day one of their existence, setting incredible attendance figures including an average attendance of 53,002 in their title-winning season of 2018 (they also set single-game MLS records with over 70,000 fans at several of their games). Supporters clubs like Terminus Legion, Resurgence, and Footie Mob keep things lively in Mercedes-Benz Stadium with plenty of singing, chanting, and banter. Atlanta United FC has also been praised for creating the Black Soccer Capital of America due to their large African American following. Get yourself to an Atlanta United FC game right away and join the crowd!
