The Columbus Crew have a long and proud history in MLS as one of the 10 remaining teams who helped to found the league way back in 1996. While the Crew were mostly very competitive in their early years, they were left frustrated in the MLS Playoffs for many seasons as they struggled to get past the Semifinals (Conference Finals), losing at that stage three years in a row in the late 1990s. A modicum of success came in 2002 when the Crew claimed their first trophy by winning the US Open Cup with a 1-0 win over the LA Galaxy. The big breakthrough, however, came in 2008, when the Crew not only finished first in the regular season to claim the Supporters’ Shield, but got all the way to the MLS Cup Final for the first time in their history. There, they defeated the New York Red Bulls by a score of 3-1 to claim their first ever MLS Cup, a feat they would repeat in the COVID-troubled season of 2020. Last year, in 2023, the Crew delighted their delirious fans by going on a wild run deep into the MLS Playoffs all the way to the Final again, where they defeated the defending champions Los Angeles FC by a score of 2-1, this time (for the first time) in front of a rapturous sold out home crowd at their state of the art new stadium, Lower.com Field. The Crew’s fans, still on cloud nine after last year’s heroics, are now looking forward to 2024, believing that last year’s core players like Darlington Nagbe, Cucho Hernandez, and Diego Rossi, assisted by new acquisitions like Rudy Camacho, can lead them to that oh-so-elusive repeat.

Columbus Crew have a big local rivalry with the Chicago Fire FC due to the proximity (6 hours drive) of the two cities, meaning that away fans tend to make the journey and add to the tension. The Crew also contest the Trillium Cup against Toronto FC and the Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup against FC Dallas each year for bragging rights in their rivalries with both teams (Toronto is quite close to Columbus, while FC Dallas and the Crew were both once owned by businessman Lamar Hunt.
The Columbus Crew moved into futuristic Lower.com Fieldin 2021 after spending 22 years in Historic Crew Stadium, the first soccer-specific stadium in the United States. With its sleek angled roof and matte black finish, Lower.com Fieldis a truly spectacular modern facility, offering fans a superb close view of all the action on the field. The Crew’s three separate supporters groups have now merged into a single (very loud!) group known as Nordecke (German for “north corner”) who contribute a lot to the fantastic atmosphere at Crew homes games. Get yourself down to Lower.com Field and join the Crew!
