Auburn Tigers Basketball History

Throughout most of its history, Auburn University was known more for its football team than its basketball team, which remained a relatively obscure regional team for much of its existence.  The Tigers basketball team finally emerged on the national scene in the 1980s when they qualified for their first-ever NCAA March Madness postseason tournament in 1984, led by the incomparable Charles Barkley (who would go on to become a legend in the NBA on the court and later in the broadcast booth). The Tigers would go one better in 1985, progressing to the Sweet 16, and one even better in 1986, where they made it to the Elite 8, where they fell at last to the Louisville Cardinals Basketball by a score of 84-76. In 2019, the Tigers took another step forward when they beat several highly ranked teams, including the Kentucky Wildcats in overtime, to reach the Final Four. The Tigers got achingly close to a first ever NCAA championship final appearance, losing a heartbreaking 63-62 semifinal to the Virginia Cavaliers. All in all, while the Tigers have still only appeared in March Madness 12 times in their history, their ability to push through into the latter round of the tournament when they do has raised their profile at the national level. Along with fellow alums, Chuck Person and Jabari Smith Jr., who went on to play in the NBA, Charles Barkley is also a huge source of bridge for Auburn Tigers fans, with a statue of the legendary player erected outside Neville Arena in 2017 (one wonders how they found enough bronze to properly represent the so-called “Round Mound of Rebound”).

Auburn Tigers Basketball Rivalries

Originating from the two schools’ long football rivalry, the Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide have a major rivalry in basketball too. Games between the two teams are known as the Iron Bowl of Basketball (an homage to the Iron Bowl of football) and generally take place twice a season, with Alabama leading the all-time series 101-69 but the series becoming much more even in recent years. The Tigers also have historic rivalries with the Georgia Bulldogs and UAB Blazers

Are Auburn Tigers basketball games exciting?

The sparkling Neville Center, which opened in 2010, has definitely played its part in the team’s rise to prominence, with the Tigers’ orange-clad fans selling out the venue for most home games to try to inspire their team on to victory. The Tigers student cheering section, known as The Jungle, are known for generating plenty of noise and even camping out (in a group of tents dubbed “Jungle City”) to land tickets to big games.
