Auburn Tigers Football

Perhaps the most famous name in American college football was once a coach at Auburn University, the legendary John Heisman, who not only gave his name to the illustrious Heisman Trophy (awarded each year to the best college player in the United States) but also pioneered the introduction of the forward pass into football (one of its biggest evolutions away from its rugby-like origins). Heisman also coached basketball and baseball! His namesake trophy has been won by three Auburn Tigers players: Pat Sullivan, Cam Newton, and Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson famously shared Heisman’s love of multiple sports, not only playing college baseball alongside football at Auburn, but also going on to play professionally in MLB and the NFL at the same time! On the field, the Auburn Tigers have always provoked intense devotion in their fans by punching above their weight in a tough conference. The little team from Auburn, Alabama has won 6 national championships (5 claimed, 1 unclaimed), 16 conference titles, and 24 Bowl games. Fans come to games in their droves, decked out in the school colors of orange and navy blue, lining Donahue Drive to cheer their heroes as they walk towards Jordan-Hare Stadium as well as enjoying the day with plenty of partying and tailgating. Once inside, they pack the stands to sing the school’s fight song “War Eagle” while an actual trained golden eagle (the team’s mascot) swoops around the stadium prior to kickoff.

Auburn Tigers Rivalries

The Auburn Tigers have amassed a long list of rivals in their well over a century of college football, but none is more keenly detested than their state rivals, the Alabama Crimson Tide. These two Alabama teams contest the Iron Bowl against one another, considered one of the most fiercely fought rivalry matchups in all of American college sports. The Tigers also have a long-standing rivalry with the Georgia Bulldogs, hailing back to 1896 when a group of Auburn students actually greased the train tracks through town, which led to the Bulldogs’ train sliding halfway to the next town (the Tigers won the game 45-0). The Tigers also have rivalries with the Florida Gators, Clemson Tigers, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, LSU Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels, Tennessee Volunteers, and pretty much anyone else who will give them a game!
