About Joe Bataan

Joe Bataan (born Bataan Nitollano, 1942) is an American singer, songwriter, and producer of Filipino and African American descent, widely regarded as a pioneer of Latin soul. Born and raised in Spanish Harlem, New York City, he blended R&B, doo-wop, and Latin rhythms to shape the sound of the city's multicultural music scene. He rose to prominence with Fania Records in the late 1960s, releasing hits including "Subway Joe" and "Ordinary Guy," as well as a celebrated Latin cover of The Impressions' "Gypsy Woman." In 1973, he coined the term "salsoul," combining salsa and soul, which lent its name to his post-Fania label. His 1979 single "Rap-O Clap-O" became one of the earliest rap records to hit the European market. Known as the "King of Latin Soul," Bataan's influence continues to resonate with fans of classic Latin, soul, and hip-hop music worldwide.
