The Denver Nuggets finally climbed their way to the top of the NBA mountain last season and won it all, the franchise’s first NBA Championship in 2023 after 47 seasons of trying. The Nuggets joined the NBA in 1976, making an immediate impact with three consecutive playoff appearances that included a Western Conference Finals appearance, which they lost 2-4 to the Seattle SuperSonics. The team remained playoff contenders throughout the 1980s, qualifying nine seasons in a row and reaching the Conference Finals again in 1985, losing out this time to the high-powered Los Angeles Lakers. With the coming of the 1990s, the Nuggets struggled for well over a decade, frequently missing the playoffs or losing out in the First Round. This changed at last when Carmelo Anthony and, later, Chauncey Billups joined the team, propelling the Nuggets back to the Conference Finals in 2009, though they again fell to the Lakers at this penultimate hurdle. The team’s next surge started in 2018 thanks to the burgeoning talents of Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, who led the Nuggets on four consecutive playoff runs before the ultimate prize finally came their way in 2023. While many basketball pundits seem skeptical that the team can defend their title this season, Denver Nuggets fans will be fully backing their team to repeat in 2024.
After the exciting surge to their first ever NBA Championship in 2023, the Denver Nuggets have never been a bigger ticket draw among long-time fans and general basketball enthusiasts than they are right now. This popularity means that Denver Nuggets tickets can be difficult to get your hands on, particularly for postseason playoff games, in-season tournament games, or rivalry matchups (see below), which frequently sell out well in advance. The Denver Nuggets have always had intense rivalries with the other teams in their division like the Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers, but their most heated battles in recent years have come against the Phoenix Suns. The chants of “Suns in 4” as the team from Phoenix swept the Nuggets out of the second round of the playoffs in 2021 rang hard in the ears of Denver fans until 2023, when sweet, sweet revenge came in the form of 4-2 series victory over the Suns followed by a successful run all the way to the NBA Championship (a feat that the Suns have still famously never achieved). No doubt the teams’ future matchups will be watched with great interest in Phoenix and Denver!
The atmosphere inside Ball Arena for Denver Nuggets games has been praised as both raucous and passionate while remaining family friendly. So much excitement has grown in the city around the team in recent years with superstars like Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray that Ball Arena even got rockin’ in the 2023 NBA Playoffs when the team was playing away, hosting watch parties for away games that attracted thousands of cheering Nuggets fans!
