Leonidas Kavakos is a Greek conductor and violinist who has won international violin competitions. He has recorded for several record labels and has been a guest conductor for the London Symphony Orchestra as well as the Boston Symphony. Kavakos was born in Athens to a musical family. He first played violin at age 5 and later studied at the Hellenic Conservatory. As he grew in his talent, he got a scholarship to attend master classes at Indiana University. His concert debut took place at the 1984 Athens Festival, and in 1985, he won the International Sibelius Competition. He won a silver medal at an international Violin Competition the next year, and in 1988, he won first place at the Paganini Violin Competition and the Naumburg Competition in New York. Kavakos debuted in America in 1986 and gave recitals across the country. He tours the U.S. each year and works with major orchestras. His reputation in Europe also spread quickly, and he tours major concert halls across the continent.
Leonidas Kavakos often performs for 80 to 100 minutes with no intermission. The programs often include an encore as well. The duration depends on whether he is solo or has a pianist or orchestra backing him up. Concerts with a full orchestra can stretch as long as 2 hours.
