Los Angeles FC’s goose looked cooked after the Union went ahead 3-2 in extra time, but cometh the hour, cometh the Gareth. Seconds away from defeat, with their keeper Maxime Crépeau red-carded (and with a broken leg), Gareth Bale rose highest to head in a last-second equalizer to level the score at 3-3. The game went to penalties, which LA won 3-0, and Los Angeles FC were MLS Cup champions just 5 seasons into their MLS journey. The team even came close to a rare title repeat in 2023, losing a 2-1 heartbreaker in the MLS Cup Final to the Columbus Crew.
