Los Angeles FC

In 2018, Los Angeles FC joined the LA Galaxy as the City of Angel’s second MLS franchise (in keeping with the general pattern of “double teaming”: Lakers-Clippers, Dodgers-Angels, Rams-Chargers, Kings-Ducks). With a massive multicultural soccer fan base already extant in the city and eager for another team, Los Angeles FC was instantly embraced by large groups of local fans, with yearly local derbies against the Galaxy becoming must-see events (nicknamed El Trafico by some genius with a sharp sense of humor and inside knowledge of Los Angeles’s terrible traffic). Eschewing the usual pattern for expansion teams (losing), Los Angeles FC leapt into instant contention upon joining the league, instantly emerging as one of the best teams in MLS. The team finished first overall in its second season, claiming the 2019 Supporters’ Shield and going on to the Semifinals of the MLS Playoffs, losing out in the end to the Seattle Sounders by a score of 3-1. Bolstered by the aging and creaky but still magical Welsh superstar Gareth Bale, Los Angeles FC came raging back in 2022 to register what would be called a League-Cup Double in Europe, claiming the Supporters’ Shield before going on to win the MLS Cup over the Philadelphia Union in dramatic fashion. This MLS Cup Final (let me tell ya!) was absolutely incredible, heading into extra time 2-2 with both teams throwing men forward like there was no tomorrow (which there wasn’t). Los Angeles FC’s goose looked cooked after the Union went ahead 3-2 in extra time, but cometh the hour, cometh the Gareth. Seconds away from defeat, with their keeper Maxime Crépeau red-carded (and with a broken leg), Gareth Bale rose highest to head in a last-second equalizer to level the score at 3-3. The game went to penalties, which LA won 3-0, and Los Angeles FC were MLS Cup champions just 5 seasons into their MLS journey. The team even came close to a rare title repeat in 2023, losing a 2-1 heartbreaker in the MLS Cup Final to the Columbus Crew. Their passionate fans will be cheering their hearts out for Los Angeles FC to retake the title in 2024.

Los Angeles FC Soccer Rivalries

There might be other teams in the league, but for Los Angeles FC, it is all about beating the LA Galaxy. The two teams’ fantastic cross-town rivalry, dubbed El Trafico (in reference to LA’s horrible traffic) by some genius, began in September 2018 with one of the most dramatic MLS games of all time. Down 3-0, the Galaxy substituted in Swedish superstar (and notorious bad boy of world football) Zlatan Ibrahimovic on his debut in America. Within seconds, Zlatan scored one of the greatest goals of all time, spinning and slamming the ball home on the volley from 40 yards (Google it now!!!) before tying the game at 3-3 with another. El Trafico has continued to thrill in years since with high scorelines, great goals, and plenty of (mostly benevolent) aggro between fans! El Trafico in 2023 was held at the Rose Bowl, drawing an MLS record 82,110 fans!
