Philadelphia 76ers History

While Philadelphia undoubtedly owes much of its gritty sporting image to fictional boxer Rocky Balboa, many of the city’s actual sports teams have also been known for their toughness, particularly the 1970s Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (known as the Broad Street Bullies). The Philadelphia 76ers began life as the Syracuse Nationals, winning their first NBA championship in 1955. The team relocated to the City of Brotherly Love in 1963, where they soon claimed a second title in 1967 led by one of the best players of all time, towering Wilt Chamberlain, who was especially beloved as he was a homegrown Philadelphian. It was the better part of a decade before Philadelphia fans had much to cheer about, but when it came, it was worth the wait. Another of the game’s true greats, Julius (Dr. J) Irving landed in the city to grace its hardwood floors with his mesmerizing dribbles and signature slam dunks. In the coming years, the 76ers stormed to three NBA Finals only to endure three painful losses at the hands of the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers (twice). They finally got their hands on the trophy again in 1983 with a sweet side-dish of revenge as they swept the Lakers 4-0. A period of doldrums followed until in 2001, led by the irrepressible Allen Iverson, the 76ers reached the NBA Finals again, but lost (would you believe it?) to their old foes, the Los Angeles Lakers. Recent seasons have seen the Philadelphia 76ers become perennial postseason contenders with six straight playoff appearances (losing five in the Eastern Conference Semifinals!). Sixers fans will be eager to see if the talents of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Tobias Harris can carry them further in the 2023-24 season.

Philadelphia 76ers Rivalries

The Philadelphia 76ers have a rivalry with the Boston Celtics that is considered the oldest continuing rivalry in all of NBA basketball. The Celtics, one of the most successful NBA teams of all time, definitely have the better of the 76ers over the years, particularly in the NBA Playoffs where they have broken Sixers’ hearts on many occasions. That just makes it all the sweeter for 76ers fans when their team does manage to beat the Celtics, though! The rivalry has reignited in recent years thanks to matchups between 76ers star Joel Embiid and Celtics ace Jayson Tatum.
