If you go to a Cleveland Cavaliers game these days, you will sense the excitement around the team right away through the electric atmosphere inside Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (probably not a bad idea to visit the team shop and grab a hoodie, jersey, or hat just to show which side you’re on!). Cleveland Cavaliers History

The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA in 1970 and it is more than fair to say that for the first three decades of their existence, they didn’t exactly light up the league. While the Cavs did sometimes make the Playoffs, even managing one appearance in the 1992 Eastern Conference Finals, the team also spent many seasons in the basement of the league, logging some of the NBA’s worst-ever losing streaks on the way. Fans finally caught a break in 2003, when the Cavaliers chose LeBron James as their first-round draft pick. James led the Cavaliers to the franchise’s first-ever NBA Finals in 2007, where they unfortunately fell in a sweep to the San Antonio Spurs. James then left the team, winning two NBA championships with the Miami Heat, a decision that angered fans in Cleveland who gave James a very hostile reception whenever he came to town with the Heat, raining boos down on the superstar (while he rained down jump-shots on the Cavs…). Little did these self-same fans know that the golden age of the Cleveland Cavaliers was soon to come, with James making a shock return to Cleveland in 2014. The Cavs appeared in 4 NBA Finals in a row (hoisting the NBA Championship trophy in 2016), which were all contested against the Golden State Warriors, igniting the fire of one of the NBA’s best modern rivalries. Since those glorious years, the Cavs have had some difficult seasons, failing to make the postseason again until last season when, buoyed by players like Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Donovan Mitchell, they reached the 2023 NBA Playoffs where they eventually lost to the New York Knicks. Cavs fans will have their fingers crossed that their team can build on last season and make a deeper playoff run in 2024!

Cleveland Cavaliers Rivalries

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ rivalry with the Golden State Warriors is one of the greatest sports rivalries of modern times, with an incredible run of four straight NBA Finals contested between the two teams between 2015-2018. Added to this mix was the fascinating clash in styles between their two stars, with the power of LeBron James up against the outside shooting and trickery of the Warriors’ Steph Curry. The Cavaliers won only the second of these encounters, in 2016. The Cavs’ other big rivals are the Chicago Bulls, stemming back to “The Shot” hit by Michael Jordan against the Cavs in the last seconds of a decisive Game Five in the 1989 NBA Playoffs.
