Capleton, born Clifton George Bailey III, is a dance hall and Jamaican reggae musician with many names. In addition to his birth name and stage name, he is also often called The Prophet, the Fireman, King Shango, and King David. His songs showcase his Rastafari views, and his record label is David House Productions. Capleton was born in Islington, St. Mary, in 1967. His stage name was given to him as a nickname based on a family friend’s surname. Today, he rejects his birth name and prefers to go by “King Shango” as a tribute to the Yoruba language. When he was a teen, he used to sneak out of his home to catch acts at local dancehalls. When he turned 18, he left St. Mary for Kingston to start a career as a dance hall DJ. His first international exposure came in 1989, and he established himself in the dancehall scene from that point on.
