Despite being one of the ten surviving teams who helped found MLS in 1996, FC Dallas is the only one of them that has never lifted the MLS Cup. The team came closest in 2010 when they fought through the MLS Playoffs to their first ever MLS Cup Final.  Up against the Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas hit the post in the 86th minute with the score at 1-1 and then missed the goal by mere inches in the dying seconds of the game. The match went to extra time, during which an unlucky own goal from FC Dallas handed the result to the Rapids. The team does at least have a couple of trophies in its cabinet, having won the Supporters’ Shield once in 2016 with a record of 17-8-9. FC Dallas also brought home the US Open Cup that same year, their second victory in that competition, defeating the New England Revolution by a score of 4-2. The team also went all the way to the Semifinals of the Concacaf Championships League that season. Recent seasons have seen FC Dallas make the playoffs in most seasons but not do all that much when they get there. After a disappointing exit in the First Round last year in 2023, FC Dallas fans will be hoping that their team might finally turn things around and make this their year at long last.

FC Dallas Soccer Rivalries

FC Dallas looks no further than its own state for its greatest rivals: Houston Dynamo FC. The two contest the Texas Derby annually, with the winner getting to hold El Capitan, a replica Civil War cannon that still works (boom!). FC Dallas fans are also not too fond of the Colorado Rapids based on some snarky comments by the Rapids after defeating FC Dallas in the MLS Cup Final. FC Dallas also contests annual rivalry matchups with Chicago Fire FC and Columbus Crew, with informal trophies on the line.

Are FC Dallas soccer games exciting?

Despite its up and down results over the years, FC Dallas boasts a large core of dedicated fans, including the Dallas Beer Guardians and El Matador supporters groups, who show up game in, game out to cheer on the team. Note that while Toyota Stadium’s roof section looks very sleek and modern, supporters have complained at times that the roof only covers a small section of the stands, a problem in Texas during the hot summer months. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen if you do visit the venue in the summertime!
