LA Galaxy

While many soccer fans, even LA Galaxy fans, might believe that the history of the team really started with their audacious signing of Real Madrid Galactico David Beckham in 2007, the Galaxy (one of ten remaining teams that helped found the MLS in 1996) had actually been around more than a decade at that point and had played in five MLS Cup Finals. The Galaxy lost the first three of these finals (3-2 and 2-0 to D.C. United and 2-1 to the San Jose Earthquakes), but emerged victorious in 2002 and 2005, squeaking past the New England Revolution 1-0 on both occasions. Beckham’s arrival brought the expectation of continuing success, but even though the team finished first in the Western Conference three years in a row, winning the Supporters’ Shield twice, it was not until 2011 that the team won a third MLS Cup, with Becks providing the assist for Landon Donovan’s winning goal in a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo. They would meet the Dynamo again in the 2012 MLS Cup Final, with Beckham bowing out of his MLS career a winner as the Galaxy stormed to a 3-1 victory. In the years since, the Galaxy have continued to bring in some of the most exciting MLS signings, with Robbie Keane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Steven Gerrard generating lots of excitement both in Los Angeles and all around the MLS. Irish superstar Keane was the only one to bring them another MLS Cup, in 2014, when he scored a 111th-minute goal in extra time to win the game 2-1 for the Galaxy over the New England Revolution. All in all, the Galaxy now stand as one of the best ever teams in MLS with 5 MLS Cups, 2 US Open Cups, and 1 CONCACAF Champions League triumph (they are one of only three MLS teams to win the competition).

However, the Galaxy’s struggles in recent years have had their fans gazing across the City of Angels covetously at the success of upstart rivals Los Angeles FC. After a truly dismal 2023 season, LA Galaxy fans will be hoping for a return to past glories in 2024 led by stars Riqui Puig, Tyler Boyd, and new signing Joseph Paintsil.

The LA Galaxy play in a soccer-mad city in a beautiful stadium that seats over 27,000 fans. LA Galaxy Soccer Rivalries

Until 2018, the LA Galaxy‘s biggest rivals in MLS were their fellow Californians the San Jose Earthquakes, against whom they enjoy a heated rivalry known as the California Clásico. Often described as the best rivalry in the MLS, the California Clásico has seen the Galaxy gradually open an advantage, with their current record standing at 47-33-19, though San Jose’s MLS Cup win over the Galaxy in 2001 was a tough one to take for Galaxy fans at the time. While the Earthquakes remain major rivals, recent years have come to be dominated by the Galaxy’s electric cross-town rivalry with the new expansion team Los Angeles FC, dubbed El Trafico (in reference to LA’s horrible traffic) by some genius. El Trafico began in September 2018 with one of the most dramatic MLS games of all time. Down 3-0, the Galaxy substituted in Swedish superstar (and notorious bad boy of world football) Zlatan Ibrahimovic on his debut in America. Zlatan immediately scored one of the greatest goals of all time, spinning and slamming the ball home on the volley from 40 yards (Google it now!!!) before tying the game at 3-3 with another. El Trafico has continued to thrill in years since with high scorelines, great goals, and plenty of (mostly benevolent) aggro between fans. El Trafico in 2023 was held at the Rose Bowl, drawing an MLS record 82,110 fans!

Are LA Galaxy soccer games exciting?

LA Galaxy fans consider the MLS Cup to be partially their property, having won the thing 5 times (and lost it 4 times), so expectations are always high. While such expectations have not been met in the last few years, with the Galaxy struggling to make the playoffs, Galaxy supporters remain loyal to their team, with supporters groups like the Galaxians, Angel City Brigade, LA Riot Squad, and Galaxy Outlawz generating plenty of noise with their songs and chants to spur the players on. Get yourself to the Dignity Health Sports Park as soon as you can. You’ll have a great time and you just might witness the rebirth of one of the MLS’s greatest ever franchises!
