Seattle Sounders FC

While the Seattle Sounders have only existed as an MLS club since 2009, the team itself hearkens all the way back to the glorious but ill-fated NASL (the Pele one) of the 1970s and 80s and persisted in some form through various professional leagues throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. The Sounders enjoy immense public support due to the strong soccer culture in the Pacific Northwest that they share with neighbors and rivals V and P (possibly originating from the fact that these are probably the only places in Canada and the US where you can play soccer year round, if you can stand the rain!). The Sounders have been incredibly successful during their relatively short time in the MLS thus far, qualifying for the MLS Playoffs in all but 2 of their 14 seasons. The team won 3 straight US Open Cups during their first three MLS seasons (and finished runners-up in a fourth), then won another in 2014 alongside a Supporters’ Shield for the best regular season record in the MLS. But the biggest breakthrough came in 2016, when the Sounders appeared in their first ever MLS Cup Final against Toronto FC. Faced with frigid conditions and 30,000-plus hostile opposition supporters at Toronto’s BMO Field, the Sounders held on for a 0-0 draw before a nerve-shredding 5-4 win on penalties. They would face Toronto again the very next year, but come on on the wrong end of a 2-0 score, and again in 2019, this time in Seattle in front of nearly 70,000 home fans. The boys in green triumphed for the home crowd, defeating Toronto by a score of 3-1. The Sounders tried for a third title in the COVID-affected season of 2020, but were undone 3-0 by the Columbus Crew in the Final. The Sounders have remained strong since, appearing in the Quarterfinals last season, but with their high standards, Seattle fans will be hungry for more success in 2024!

Seattle Sounders Soccer Rivalries

The Seattle Sounders have long-standing rivalries with their Pacific Northwest counterparts, the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps, that date all the way back to the NASL in the 1970s. With all three teams now competing in MLS, an informal trophy known as the Cascadia Cup is awarded based on the results of the three teams’ regular season encounters. Fans frequently travel to away games between these three cities. The Sounders also have geographic rivalries with the San Jose Earthquakes and LA Galaxy. While Toronto FC and the Sounders do not meet too often as they play in different conferences, their three epic MLS Cup Finals (two won by the Sounders) give any encounter that they do have considerable added spice.

Are Seattle Sounders soccer games exciting?

Seattle Sounders games are without exaggeration the closest you will get in the United States to a game day atmosphere comparable to top-tier soccer leagues in England and Europe. The fans are many, loud, and passionate, quick to voice their dissatisfaction with the opposition, the ref, and their own players if need be, but also eager to burst into song and cheer on the team. Players who have come to Seattle from other countries have often been surprised by how fervent the support for the Sounders is in this large but relatively humble city.
