Hairspray is a musical, a film, and a book. The musical includes music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittmann while the book is by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. All of the adaptations are based on the 1988 John Waters film. The songs include downtown rhythm and blues and a 1960s dance style. The show is set in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962 and follows Tracy Turnblad, a teenager, as she dreams of dancing on a local TV dance program. When she gets a role on the show, she becomes a star overnight and leads the charge for social change on the show. Hairspray, the musical, opened in 2002 in Seattle and moved to Broadway in 2003. It won eight Tony Awards that year and got thirteen nominations. Since then, the musical has gone on many national tours and was adapted into a film again in 2007. On Broadway, the show ran nearly 3,000 times before closing down in 2009.
