New York City FC are slightly unusual in the MLS in that they are part of a global network of “City” soccer teams owned by the same organization from Abu Dhabi that runs Manchester City of the English Premier League (a group that also owns stakes in Melbourne City in Australia, Yokohama F Marinos in Japan, Mumbai City in India, and others). The team joined MLS in 2015 as an expansion franchise that would play alongside (and against!) the long-serving New York Red Bulls (themselves the other main global network-owned MLS team) in keeping with the two teams per sport pattern mostly followed in the Big Apple (Yankees-Mets, Knicks- Nets, Giants-Jets, Rangers-Islanders). The first two of these teams have actually provided a (temporary) solution to the main problem that has dogged New York City FC through their early years in the MLS: the lack of a suitable and available stadium. As a stopgap measure, the team has largely split their games between Yankee Stadium and the Mets’ Citi Field. While the shape of a baseball stadium is far from ideal for watching (or playing!) a soccer game, the size of the two stadiums has at least allowed for large crowds to come watch the games. Plans are in place for New York City FC to move into their own soccer-specific stadium by 2027. In the meantime, however, why not go see them? Who wouldn’t want to say that they’ve been to see a soccer game in Yankee Stadium? On the field (baseball or otherwise), New York City FC have fared quite well for an expansion team, qualifying for the MLS Playoffs in 7 of 9 seasons thus far. Their greatest year to date was by far 2021, when a playoff run led to an MLS Cup Final away in Oregon against the Portland Timbers, which New York City FC won in a dramatic penalty shootout to claim the title. They added a Campeones Cup (played between the champions of the US and Mexico) in 2022. After a poor 2023 in which the team failed to make the Playoffs, New York City FC fans will be hoping that new signings like Jovan Mijatović and Andrés Perea can reenergize their team in 2024.

New York City FC also has a rivalry with the Philadelphia Union in keeping with the traditional animosity between New York and Philadelphia sports teams.
