Named in honor of the organization that represents American military veterans, Legion Field is a large open-air stadium located in Birmingham, Alabama that has served primarily as a host venue for college football games over nearly a century of service. For many years it was home to the Alabama Crimson Tide as well as the backdrop to their annual Iron Bowl clash with the Auburn Tigers. The UAB Blazers also played their home games at Legion Field from 1991-2020 with a two year absence in 2015-2016. Various short-lived minor professional teams have also appeared at Legion Field over the years, including a one-year stint by the Birmingham Barracudas, who were part of the Canadian Football League’s fleeting attempt to expand into the United States in the mid-1990s. Currently, the only regularly scheduled NCAA football to appear at Legion Field is the annual Magic City Classic between the Alabama A&M Bulldogs and Alabama State Hornets, which attracts a great deal of interest state-wide. Various concessions and food trucks pop up in and around the stadium when games or events are held there, along with kiosks selling team or event merchandise.
As well as college football games, Legion Field has also hosted high school football competitions as well as international soccer matches by both men’s and women’s teams, including group stage matches at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games. The venue is also often home to large-scale concerts by artists such as the Rolling Stones, U2, and Pink Floyd. No concerts or international soccer matches are scheduled yet for 2024, but be sure to check back on TicketX as this can change at any time!
