Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is an annual celebration of the people and culture of San Francisco. Hosted in Golden Gate Park every October over the three days, it draws hundreds of thousands of people and features live music performances. Violin, mandolin, and guitar virtuoso Warren Hellman, who happens to be a venture capitalist, initiated the festival in 2001 and originally invited only bluegrass artists.
However, in 2004, more genres were incorporated, and the name was changed from Bluegrass Festival to Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass. Completely funded by Hellman and noncommercial since its first year, the festival’s low-key formula of inclusion produces a popular and consistent celebration of talented musicians.
Among the biggest and most beloved events in the Bay Area, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is a unique festival in terms of the atmosphere it offers. Featuring more than 80 artists, with 6 stages and 3 days, it is back at the Golden Gate Park on October 4-6, 2024.
Information on performers is yet to be released. But, official announcements should be made from mid-June on the festival’s Instagram page. Last year’s lineup was released in phases starting June 25th. It featured a number of famous and new-coming singers of the Americana genre. Former performers are Marcus Mumford (of Mumford & Sons), Lucius, Conor Oberst, Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris.
This year, outlaw country legend Steve Earle, who has played before, will be back on its stage for another great year. Other previous artists who have graced the festival include Emmylou Harris, who is a regular performer; Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Steve Earle, Say She She, and Dustbowl Revival of Los Angeles. More of the same is expected.
The opening times for the event are as follows, so be sure to plan your day accordingly
● Friday – 1-7 PM (gates open at 11:00 AM)
● Saturday – 11: 00 AM- 7: 00 PM (gates open at 9:00 AM)
● Sunday – 11: 00 AM -7: 00 PM (gates open at 9:00 AM)
Unlike other prominent music festivals in Northern California, which may set the ticket price at several hundred dollars for single-day passes, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival is open to anyone interested in the genre to see performances by some of the biggest names in the industry free of charge.
Hellman, a San Francisco resident, started the event because he was a big fan of the music. During a conversation with a friend, Hellman, a man who loves to play the banjo, told him that he wanted to begin a bluegrass festival.
This led to an introduction to a producer and a booking agent, and then the festival was formed. It has expanded and grown over the years to incorporate all kinds of musical styles; thus the inclusion of the word ‘Hardly’.
Those who are interested can expect to claim a spot in the grass, watch and listen to the variety of musicians and bands for free. The event’s Instagram account should be followed for more information and announcements about the festival.
All performances can be watched on their official website, Facebook page, or YouTube channel without any charge. This festival donates all its profits to music-based charities and independent music venues; in the past two years alone, it has helped raise over $4 million for people in need during the pandemic. Admission to these locations is free, but donations are welcome to continue with the support.
The party doesn't end at the festival venue: There are tons of aftershow parties taking place across the festival city. Musicians, performers, and DJs tend to promote their new music at bars, music halls, and clubs across the city so make sure to catch them in action. Although, aftershows for 2024 are yet to be announced.
