Local Natives are an indie rock band based out of Los Angeles that was originally called Cavil at Rest. Their first album came out in 2009, and they named it after the house they all shared in Orange County, Gorilla Manner. The album got positive reviews and sparked extensive touring. Their second album came out in 2013, and the lyrical content of the songs was heavily influenced by the founding bass guitarist, who left the group, and the death of co-lead vocalist Ayer’s mother. After albums three and four, the band went through a period of personal turmoil, then recorded new music in 2023 and 2024. Ayer decided to leave the band amicably in 2024, and his last show was in November of that year. Everything Local Natives creates is a collaboration between the members, including songwriting, artwork, and everything in between.
