About Philadelphia Orchestra

The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the “Big Five” American orchestras. Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the orchestra called the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts its home. It performs subscription concerts and also performs at Marian Anderson Hall. The Philadelphia Orchestra also performs an annual concert series at Carnegie Hall. The orchestra has been active in the recording studio over the past two decades, recording for Columbia Records and RCA Victor, primarily. Yannick Nézet-Séguin has been the music director since 2018. The Philadelphia Orchestra was founded in 1900 as a small group of musicians led by a pianist. They even traveled to the White House in 1906 to perform a concert. In 2011, the orchestra filed for bankruptcy due to budget deficits, and in 2016, players went on strike due to a lack of raises. The Philadelphia Orchestra has numerous firsts, including being the first symphony to make recordings, the first to sponsor a radio broadcast, and the first to appear on television, among others.
