LaVell Edwards Stadium Events

Located on the grounds of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, LaVell Edwards Stadium has been the home of the BYU Cougars football team since 1964. The open layout of this large but attractive stadium offers views of the mountains that surround Provo, a small city approximately 50 miles south of the larger center of Salt Lake City. The Cougars have been quite a successful team on the field across a century of existence (football actually started up in the 1890s at BYU, but was banned for 20 years due to an unfortunate death from the sport, until the Cougars began playing in 1922), capturing 23 conference titles, 1 claimed national title (1984), and 17 Bowl victories (overall Bowl record: 17-22-1). The team has played in several different conferences throughout its history and recently made news by joining the very competitive Big 12 Conference in 2023. Cougars fans, both students and local residents of Utah, love their team, with many frequently driving great distances to come see games in Provo. Wearing their school colors of blue and white, they fill the stands of LaVell Edwards Stadium to sing “The Cougar Song” along to the sounds of The Power of the Wasatch, the school’s marching band. Originally, the team had an actual pair of cougar cubs as mascots in the 1920s, but they broke out of their enclosure and attacked local pets and livestock, before they were recaptured. The school persisted with live mascots for a time (borrowing them from local zoos) but eventually decided that a mascot in a suit was safer (and perhaps more ethical), thus giving birth to Cosmo the Cougar, who prowls the sidelines at current BYU games. When the Cougars win a game, a Victory Bell that came to Utah with the earliest Mormon settlers is rung to celebrate. The Bell is quite the survivor, having lasted through overzealous ringings, kidnappings, a fall from a tower, and the general ravages of nearly two centuries of time (though the stadium hosted even older residents for a time, housing a bevy of Jurassic dinosaur fossils until a more suitable home could be found). LaVell Edwards Stadium is primarily used for home football games and does not host concerts or other such events, though its parking lot was used during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Fans who arrive hungry will find plenty of tasty things to eat, from Korean BBQ bowls to loaded hot dogs to a maple-frosted donut called the Cougar Tail. Alcohol (and smoking) is not permitted in the stadium or anywhere on campus. Kiosks and shops inside LaVell Edwards Stadium or around campus sell all kinds of Cougars merchandise.
