The Linkou Arena’s story began in 1973 when Formosa Plastics Group Chairman Yung-Ching Wang donated the first domestic dome gymnasium in Taiwan to the country’s government, making the start of a national sports commitment. The gesture led to the set-up of a multi-functional park in May of 1984, one which encompassed the facility and some other acquired lands.
The park consequently became the forte of the National College of Physical Education and Sports. Established officially on July 1st, 1987, subsequent presidents were appointed over the years that followed.
Initially, the college offered two programs but then expanded to add other departments and graduate schools. On this beat, it eventually evolved into the National Taiwan Sports University (NSTU), officially on February 1st, 2008.
When the college came under the leadership of President Chin-Hsung Kao, it flourished by offering a multiplicity of undergraduate and graduate programs, while hosting key events such as the 2017 Universiade competitions. In November of the same year, the Universiade Memorial Plaza was launched on campus in commemoration of the event’s long-living legacy.
In August 2018, Professor Ping-Kun Chiu assumed the presidency. A year later, he oversaw the establishment of new initiatives and centers, like the Chinese Language Center and the Sports Policy and Social Research Center. Then, to crown these efforts, in August 2020, the university introduced the Sports Promotion Special Class for Aborigines to further its commitment to sports education.
The Linkou Sports Center mixes modern architecture with futuristic functionality. It has a sleek exterior that features a dome-like roof complemented by expansive glass panels. The interior, on the other hand, has a spacious lobby and boasts what is by many standards a versatile sports hall.
The lobby is adorned with minimalist yet state-of-the-art decor, and it leads to various sections of the venue. High ceilings and ample seating makes the hall accommodate a range of activities, basketball, and gymnastics inclusive.
The hall’s color scheme is predominantly neutral, and with vibrant accents, creates an energetic atmosphere. In general, the arena embodies the institution’s dedication to not just educational prosperity, but also athletic excellence.
