Opened in January 1927 as a Broadway-style theatre, the Montalbán was initially called the Wilkes Vine Street Theatre. In the early 1930s, it began running as a movie theatre and did so for a few years until it became the CBS Radio Playhouse and home to the Al Jolson Show.
Originally, it was planned out by Cecil B. DeMille, a movie mogul. During these stages, it was called DeMille’s Playhouse. The design was done by architect Myron Hunt, but for reasons unknown, the planner’s intentions went up in flames.
Eventually, the project was picked up by Frank B. Strong and John F. Wilson, both of whom did much to retain elements from the original plans. Per the stories that followed, it was intended to be called The Queen Theatre. But the venue was named the Wilkes Theatre by the time it was unveiled (January 1927).
Fast-forward to 1999, the Ricardo Montalbán Foundation purchased the facility intending to provide training and inspiration for emerging artists in the Hispanic community. This would enable them to enter the mainstream performing arts and entertainment industry at large.
The venue was reopened as Montalbán Theatre in 2004, and since then it has run various festivals, rentals, and a wildly successful cinema club.
From film screenings and live performances to comedy shows, music concerts, and special events, the theatre hosts a dynamic mix of entertainment options. With charm and versatile spaces, it’s a go-to platform for artists, comedians, musicians, and industry professionals to showcase their talents and engage with audiences.
Some of the shows that will be hosted at the center this year are Batman 1989, La La Land, The Breakfast Club, Casablanca, Pulp Fiction, and Netflix is a Joke. Acts like Andrew Prahlow, David Letterman, and Katherine Ryan will be visiting the theatre to perform. These events will run from April until May, pending other schedules.

Attendees can use Los Angeles Metro buses or the Metro Rail system, like the Red Line, which has a station at Hollywood/Vine within a short walk away from the theatre. In addition, some Metro bus routes stop near the theatre, which is great for those coming from different parts of the city.
If you are driving there, several parking options are provided at and close to the venue. The best part is that the Montalban Theatre offers these lots for a small fee of under $5. However, parking spaces may be quickly filled up during peak hours or on the weekends. So, make sure to arrive early to cop one.
