Apart from the 1950s when the team made all four of their Elite 8 appearances and their sole appearance in the Final Four (1953), the Washington Huskies have always been better known for their football team’s prowess on the gridiron than their basketball team’s success on the hardcourt. The last few seasons have been disappointing, though, with a disastrous 5-21 season in 2020-21 the worst of them. The Washington Huskies have a huge state rivalry with the Washington State Cougars of Pullman, Washington, in all sports, including basketball. The teams have played one another annually in basketball since 1916, with the Huskies dominating the rivalry 186-111 historically.
