The Utah Utes men’s basketball team has long been one of the top basketball programs in the western United States. The Utes have qualified for 29 NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournaments over the course of their history, making 16 appearances in the Sweet 16 and 11 in the Elite 8. The team has progressed into the Final Four on 4 occasions, winning the tournament once way back in 1944 and narrowly missing out on a second title in 1998 after a heartbreaking 78–69 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA championship final. Many fine players have suited up for the Utes throughout the years and gone on to star in the NBA, including Andrew Bogut, Tom Chambers, and Andre Miller. In recent seasons, the Utes have been a bit of a mixed bag, struggling at times to qualify for the March Madness tournament due to poor conference records (their last conference title was in 2008-2009), but also pushing through to the Sweet 16 in 2015. Since 2016, however, the Utes have struggled, failing to make even a single appearance at the national level and posting losing records in the last three seasons. Utes fans will be hoping to see a big turnaround in 2024 that will put their beloved team back on the right track.
The Utah Utes basketball team is the big draw at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, consistently pulling in big crowds for home games. While this makes the atmosphere at such games electric, it can also render tickets slightly difficult to find, particularly for postseason tournament games, key conference deciders, or rivalry matchups (see below). Without any shadow of a doubt, the Utah Utes have no bigger rival than their fellow Utah denizens, the BYU Cougars. While perhaps better recognized as a football rivalry (known as the Holy War) these days, the basketball rivalry between the two schools actually dates back further and was the major focus throughout most of the schools’ history. The two teams first met in 1909 and have played ever since, with the BYU Cougars holding a narrow 134-129 advantage overall in a series that has swung back and forth over the years. The Utes of course hold the ultimate bragging rights in basketball, having won a national championship.
The Utes basketball team is a huge point of pride in Salt Lake City, drawing in thousands of fans clad in red to “flash the U” in support of their team. A trip to see the Runnin’ Utes in action will be an experience that you will not soon forget!
