About Dorrance Dance

Dorrance Dance is an award-winning tap dance company based in New York City, founded in 2011 by artistic director and 2015 MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance. Rooted in the belief that tap is simultaneously movement and music, the company is dedicated to honoring the Black American legacy of tap dance while pushing the form into bold new territory. Dorrance, raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, trained under tap master Gene Medler and performed with notable companies including STOMP before founding her own. The company has toured nationally and internationally, performing at prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center, Jacob's Pillow, Sadler's Wells London, and New York City Center. Dorrance made her Broadway choreographic debut with Flying Over Sunset at Lincoln Center Theater in 2021.
