New York City Ballet, or NYCB, is a ballet company that George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein founded in 1948. It grew from other troupes combining to create one company. NYCB had the same General Director from the beginning through 1989. Kirstein helped to develop and sustain the organization with fundraising activities, shows, and oversight. The NYCB became a resident of the City Center of Music and Drama in 1948 and had so much success it moved to the New York State Theater, which is now called the David H. Koch Theater. It is the first city ballet in the U.S. with two permanent venues, the second being the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York. The company’s training school, founded by Balanchine, is the School of American Ballet. New York City Ballet has the largest repertoire of any ballet company in America, staging 60 ballets in winter and spring and 20 in the summer.
