Atlanta Ballet is the longest continuously performing ballet company in the United States, founded in 1929 by Dorothy Alexander as the Dorothy Alexander Concert Group, the nation's first regional ballet company. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, it holds the distinction of being the official State Ballet of Georgia, a title granted by the state legislature in 1973. The company gained professional status in 1967 and has since built a diverse repertoire spanning beloved classics, full length story ballets, and bold world premieres. Current Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin, who trained at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and danced with San Francisco Ballet, leads the company. Atlanta Ballet also operates one of the largest dance education programs in the United States, the Centre for Dance Education, serving students of all ages across metro Atlanta.
