About Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) is the largest modern dance company in the United States, founded in New York City on March 30, 1958, by choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey. Dedicated to enriching the American modern dance heritage and celebrating the African American cultural experience, the company premiered Ailey's masterpiece Revelations in 1960, a work now recognized as one of the most performed modern dance pieces in the world. Recognized by U.S. Congressional resolution as a vital American cultural ambassador, AAADT has performed for an estimated 25 million people in 71 countries. Currently led by Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack, the company is part of the broader AILEY organization, which includes Ailey II, the Ailey School, and community programs based at the Joan Weill Center for Dance in New York City.
