About Shen Yun
Shen Yun Performing Arts is a nonprofit performing arts company founded in New York in 2006 by a group of Chinese artists with a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance and music. The company, which describes itself as presenting "China before communism," stages an entirely new production each year featuring approximately 20 vignettes of classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dances, and orchestral music that blends traditional Chinese instruments with a full Western orchestra. Now comprising eight touring companies with approximately 480 performers, Shen Yun has performed in more than 200 cities across 36 countries. The organization is operated by practitioners of Falun Gong and has faced repeated interference attempts from the Chinese government, which bans the group from performing in China.
