The Boston Celtics are perhaps the most-storied team in NBA history, inspiring fierce loyalty and passion in their many fans in Boston and around the world. The Celtics dynasty of the 1950s and 60s, during which the team won 8 consecutive NBA championships with legendary stars like center Bill Russell, will likely never be equaled. The team rose to power again in the 1980s, led by the unstoppable Larry Bird, punctuated by a number of memorable NBA Finals battles, particularly against Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics went through a long championship dry spell (by their standards) in the 1990s and early 2000s, even enduring the humiliation of a six-season stretch without making the playoffs. In 2008, they finally got back to the NBA Finals and won their 17th NBA Championship over the Lakers (who else?) in six games. In recent years, the Celtics have again emerged as one of the top teams in the league, finishing 2nd in the Eastern Conference across the 2022-23 season by just a single game to the Milwaukee Bucks. They fell just short of making the 2023 Finals, losing out after a nail-biter seven-game Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat. With players like 2023 All-Star MVP Jayson Tatum, now back to himself after struggling with an ankle injury in the playoffs, many hoops experts consider the Boston Celtics to be serious favorites for the NBA Championship in 2024. Celtics fans will definitely be hoping that their team can claim back the sole mantle of most successful team in NBA history, as they are currently deadlocked with their old rivals the Lakers on 17 NBA championships apiece. What a year it would be if those two met in the Finals!
Being the most successful team in NBA history is all well and good, but it does tend to make you some enemies over time. The Boston Celtics’ greatest rivalry is without a doubt against the Los Angeles Lakers, the only other team in the NBA that could possibly challenge the Celtics’ claim at being the number one franchise in NBA history. This rivalry reached its peak in the 1980s when the college basketball rivalry between the Lakers’ Magic Johnson and Celtics’ Larry Bird spilled over into the NBA Finals, which the Celtics won 4-3 in 1984 and the Lakers won 4-2 in 1985 and 1987. All in all, the teams have met 12 times in the NBA Finals, with the Celtics winning the first eight but the Lakers winning 3 of the last 4 (most recently in 2010). The teams are tied for having the most NBA championships in league history, at 17 apiece. The Celtics also have heated regional rivalries with the Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers, as well as a more recent rivalry with the Miami Heat who they have met 3 times in the last 4 Eastern Conference Finals.
It is a well known fact by supporters of teams from other cities that Boston Celtics fans, like all Boston sports fans, are completely nuts. Celtics fans, known as Celtic Nation, claim that they are so diehard that they “bleed green” and flood TD Garden with the color for every home game (with clothes, banners, and face paint, not green blood thankfully). The sound inside the Garden can be overwhelming for even the most seasoned visiting players. Come see a Boston Celtics game; there’s really no experience like it!
