Rachmaninoff, full name Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff, was a conductor, virtuoso pianist, and composer from Russia. He was known as one of the best, finest pianists of his time, and his compositions represent Classical Russian music and Romanticism. Rachmaninoff featured the piano heavily in his compositions and used his own skills as a performer to explore the technical possibilities. As part of a musical family, he learned piano at age 4 and went on to study composition and piano at the Moscow Conservatory. By the time he graduated in 1892, he had already written several compositions. He premiered what resulted in the disastrous Symphony No. 1 in 1897 and went into a four-year depression and composing break. His Piano Concerto No. 2 was well-received in 1901. He toured the U.S. as a pianist in 1909, and after the Russian Revolution, his family settled in New York. His music is still played by orchestras and symphonies today.
