JJ Grey & Mofro is a Southern rock/swamp band hailing from Jacksonville, Florida. The band can be traced back to the 90s when John Higginbotham, also known as JJ Grey, and Darly Hance signed with a label in the UK and started playing shows in Europe as Mofro Magic. The duo met while working for an AC company and became friends through their mutual love of music. Their first band was called Faith Nation, then they were in a funk band Alma Zuma. JJ Grey came up with the term “Mofro” as a way to explain the sound their eventual band made. It was a nickname he used to have, but became the band’s name since it “Sounded southern.” They released their first album in 2001 with songs inspired by the area where JJ Grey grew up. A car accident later that year slowed the band down and their second release didn’t come out until 2004.
