Queen Latifah

As far as Black music’s humble beginnings are concerned, there is no narrating the story without recognizing what many call the true queen of hip-hop. More often than not, she is mentioned when it comes to honoring the industry’s most impactful artists.

Born as Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey, Queen Latifah is one of rap music’s pioneers. At 8 years old, she adopted the name Latifah, which means delicate, kind and sensitive. During high school, she began spitting bars with two friends of hers as a group then called Ladies First. Later, she joined Flavor Unit, a rap group.

Signed to a label then called Tommy Boy Records, Latifah’s maiden album, All Hail the Queen, came out in 1989 as one of the first hip-hop albums with a feminist slant. Her second body of work, dubbed Nature of a Sista, was released in 1991. If anything, it built on her women empowerment movement.

Dana went on a hiatus due to the death of her brother. But when she returned, Black Reign was released. U.N.I.T.Y, a track off the album, earned a Grammy award. However, she had ventured outside music, as she soon began acting. Her starring role in Chicago (2002) earned her an Oscar nomination.

Queen Latifah’s Discography

After her impactful debut album, Latifah navigated life issues until she chanced on her third one,  Black Reign, which was released in 1993. It showcased a more street-oriented style, earning her critical acclaim and becoming the first solo female rap album to achieve gold status.

Latifah's ability to blend genres, as seen in her incorporation of R&B elements, demonstrated her versatility as an artist. Despite facing criticism, her dedication to authenticity and social commentary remained steadfast.

She showcased versatility by transitioning from hip-hop to singing with The Dana Owens Album (2004), peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 and receiving a Grammy nod for best jazz vocal albumTrav'lin Light (2007) achieved greater success on pop charts, securing a Grammy for instrumental arrangement. She later revisited her rap origins with Persona (2009), receiving mixed reviews from critics.
