Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire, a legendary American band, blends disco, jazz, funk, and soul. They've sold around 90 million records worldwide. Formed in Chicago in 1969 by Maurice White, a former Chess Records session drummer, Maurice's brother Verdine White and other talented musicians joined him.

Originally named The Salty Peppers, they later became Earth, Wind, and Fire. The name came from Maurice's astrological sign and his belief in elemental significance. Unlike most band leaders, Maurice also played the role of songwriter and producer. But more importantly, he had a spiritual approach to making music. This made the band’s sound quite different from others. He made this difference until his rather sad passing in 2016.

As of now, the group consists Verdine White, Philip Bailey, Ralph Johnson, B David Whitworth, Myron McKinely, John Paris, Morris O’Conner and Serg Dimitrijevic, who serve as bassist, vocalists/percussionist, keyboardist, drummer/vocalists, lead guitarists/vocalists and guitarist, respectively.

Rise to Fame

The band began stepping into the spotlight in the early 1970s, majorly because of the way they mixed African rhythms with jazz, rock, funk, and of course, some soul. During that time, several albums were made atop Warner Bros. Records. This included their first eponymous album, which was put out in 1971, and then The Need of Love in 1972.

But Earth Wind & Fire’s Breakthrough album Head to the Sky, which came out in 1973, acted as a precursor to many subsequent releases. Their sixth studio work, notably having a number one hit titled Shining Star, reached the height of charts. It also brightened them their first Grammy Award, after peaking.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Earth, Wind & Fire experienced a height in commercial success. Some of the biggest singles from albums such as "All 'n All" in 1977 and "I Am" in 1979 were "September," "Boogie Wonderland" (with The Emotions), and "After the Love Has Gone.”

Performing on stage brought the band closer to the hearts of crowds, from the east to west coast and beyond. Their sound ruled many dance floors and filled airwaves with an excitement unseen before. The music was not just an entertaining spectacle but also a conveyor of important messages: unity, positivity, and spirituality.

Besides a Grammy, Earth, Wind, and Fire’s work also got them a variety of awards. Most notably, entries into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They band were also honored with a welcome into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Lastly, they appeared on the Hollywood Walk of Shame.

Earth Wind and Fire’s Upcoming Events or Tours in 2024

This year, the band has 49 events to host across multiple cities and venues. The first part of their 2024 campaign will start on May 5th at the  New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans, Los Angeles.

What’s interesting about this current movement is that Earth Wind and Fire will tour with the not so infamous Lionel Richie. Their itinerary takes them to different cities, with a starting point at the Thompson Boling Arena in Knoxville on the 23rd of May. Following this, they go to Vystar Veteran Memorial Arena in Jacksonville on May 25th.

Still, on the matter, they visit Legacy Arena in Birmingham on May 28th for some breathtaking performances in one of America’s most upbeat, music-loving cities. After this, the group moves to Kia Center in Orlando on May 29th.

Other tour dates and venues with Lionel Richie include:

  • June 04th – Frost Bank Center in San Antonio

  • June 06th – T-Mobile Center in Kansas City

  • June 07th - BOK Center in Tulsa

  • June 09th – CHI Health Center in Omaha

  • June 12th – KFC Yum! Center in Louisville

  • June 13th – Schottenstein Center in Columbus

  • June 15th – KeyBank Center in Buffalo

  • June 16th – PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh

The band will not end their tour in Pittsburg, as they would go to Chicago to keep the streak going. First they hit Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Maryland Heights on July 10th and then go to the Allstate Arena in Rosemont on July 12th.
Up next is an event at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on July 13th. This will be followed by another one on July 16th at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls. From there, Earth Wind and Fire proceed to Pine Knob Music Theater in Clarkston on 17th July.

The group, in the company of Chicago, will go to the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati on July 19th for one of the city’s most anticipated and most attended concerts. Their next stop? The Noblesville at Ruoff Music Center on July 20th. Their tour with the act is more or less an endless list, but more details can be found on TicketX.
