Situated way out in the middle of Alabama, Bryant-Denny Stadium is remarkable in that the entire population of its home city, Tuscaloosa, is only slightly larger than its official capacity. The stadium is a big draw to football fans from all over the state, however, being home to the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide football team since 1929. Legend has it that the Crimson Tide acquired its name back in 1907, when they were known as the Crimson White. In a game against the powerful Auburn Tigers, they battled to a hard-fought 6-6 tie, their white jerseys dyed red by the iron-rich soil of the Birmingham mud. A local newspaper reporter hailed the heroes as a “Crimson Tide” and the name stuck. These days, the wave of red extends far past the playing surface up into the stands where huge swathes of crimson-clad fans cheer on their team and sing along while the marching band pumps out the classic “Yea, Alabama! Drown 'em Tide! Every 'Bama man's behind you, Hit your stride.” Tailgating is a big tradition here, with friends pooling together snacks and drinks to get pumped up before big games. Anyone showing up to the stadium on an empty stomach will find plenty of typical stadium snacks, such as nachos, burgers, hot dogs, burgers, peanuts, and beer, along with an elephant’s trunk sausage (the mascot of the team is an elephant).
