The Dip began as a humble experiment by a group of friends (Jarred Katz, Mark Hunter, and Tom Eddy) at UW (the University of Washington) in Seattle who decided to put together a rhythm and blues band. To add some funk to their rather pop-focused band, the three decided to merge with a group known as the Honeynut Horns, three jazz musicians who frequently jammed at a house nearby. This merger became The Dip, playing at house parties, bars, and other local venues until they decided to record their own EP and release their own self-titled album online.
