Bun B is the stage name of Bernard James Freeman, an American rapper, activist, and educator born on March 19, 1973, in Port Arthur, Texas. Best known as one half of the pioneering Southern hip-hop duo UGK (Underground Kingz), which he formed alongside Chad "Pimp C" Butler in the late 1980s, Bun B is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of Southern rap and the Dirty South movement. UGK released their debut album Too Hard to Swallow in 1992, followed by the platinum-certified Ridin' Dirty (1996), which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200, and the self-titled double album Underground Kingz (2007), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Pimp C passed away on December 4, 2007, at age 33. Bun B launched a solo career alongside his UGK work, releasing Trill (2005), II Trill (2008), and Trill OG (2010), the latter earning a rare five-mic rating from The Source. Beyond music, Bun B has served as a distinguished lecturer at Rice University in Houston since 2011, teaching courses on hip-hop and religion, and co-founded the popular Houston smashburger concept Trill Burgers.
