Now, while it’s literally true that Broadway itself is just one street of so many on New York City’s Island of Manhattan, anyone who knows anything about theater will be aware that this long diagonal thoroughfare has given its name to the most famous theater district in the history of the world. Many of the world’s most-renowned playwrights and composers (George Bernhard Shaw, Arthur Miller, George Gershwin, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Tennessee Williams) have written for the Broadway stage, and many of history’s finest onstage talents (John Gielgud, Julie Andrews, Lea Salonga, Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Barbra Streisand, Hugh Jackman, Alan Cummings) have dazzled generations of Broadway audiences.
