About Brian Blade

Brian Blade is an American jazz drummer, composer, bandleader, session musician, and singer-songwriter born on July 25, 1970, in Shreveport, Louisiana. The son of Zion Baptist Church pastor Brady L. Blade Sr., he grew up immersed in gospel music and began playing violin at age nine before shifting to drums, inspired by his older brother Brady Blade Jr., who was the church drummer. After studying at Loyola University in New Orleans, Blade emerged in the 1990s as one of jazz's most sought-after young drummers, recording with Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois, and Chick Corea. In 1997 he formed Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band with pianist Jon Cowherd, releasing their self-titled debut on Blue Note Records in 1998, followed by Perceptual (2000), Season of Changes (2008), and Landmarks (2014). From 2000 until Wayne Shorter's death in 2023, Blade was a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet alongside Danilo Pérez and John Patitucci, widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz ensembles of the 21st century. In 2009 he released Mama Rosa, a singer-songwriter album dedicated to his grandmother. Blade received the ECHO Jazz Award for International Artist of the Year in Drums/Percussion in 2013 and performed at the White House as part of International Jazz Day 2016. He is widely regarded as one of the most spiritually expressive and technically gifted drummers in contemporary jazz.
