He later studied ethno-musicology at Oberlin College and moved to Oakland in 2004, studying trumpet with Marcus Belgrave, who worked with Ray Charles. The band's sound blends blues, gospel, New Orleans second-line jazz, Bay Area R&B, and funk, built around soulful vocal harmonies and a danceable groove.
