About The Skatalites

The Skatalites are a Jamaican ska band formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1964, widely regarded as the originators and definitive masters of ska music. Founded by a group of Kingston session musicians — including Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Lloyd Brevett, Lloyd Knibb, Lester Sterling, Don Drummond, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Moore, Jerome "Jah Jerry" Haynes, and Jackie Opel — many of whom trained at the Alpha Boys School, a Kingston institution known for producing skilled musicians, the Skatalites served as the house band for producers Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and Duke Reid and backed virtually every major Jamaican recording artist of the early 1960s, including Bob Marley & The Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, Prince Buster, Ken Boothe, and Desmond Dekker. Their own instrumental recordings, including "Guns of Navarone" and "Man in the Street," became anthems of the ska movement. After disbanding in 1965 following the arrest of trombonist Don Drummond, the group reunited in 1983 and performed at Reggae Sunsplash, launching a sustained international touring career that has continued to this day. One of the first Jamaican acts to sign with Island Records, they reached the British Top 40 with "Guns of Navarone" and received Grammy nominations for Best Reggae Album in 1996 and 1997. The Skatalites are celebrated as the musical foundation from which ska, rocksteady, reggae, and the global ska revival were all built.
